Training Philosophy

OUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY

A PLACE TO LEARN, GROW & GET BETTER

You don’t need experience to train at Primate Jiu Jitsu. You don’t need to already be in shape, athletic, or know anything about martial arts.

We’ll meet you where you are.

Our coaches and experienced training partners understand what it’s like to be new. We take pride in having a community that helps beginners learn the basics, understand how to train, and gradually become more comfortable on the mat.

You’ll be surrounded by people with different backgrounds, body types, abilities, and goals — from complete beginners to experienced competitors.

Wherever you’re starting, we’ll help you take the next step.

BECOME CAPABLE EVERYWHERE

At Primate, skill development comes first.

Our Jiu Jitsu incorporates Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, and judo because we believe a well-rounded martial artist should be comfortable wherever a fight or grappling match goes.

That means developing the ability to take someone down, stay on your feet when necessary, control positions, escape when you’re in trouble, apply submissions, and remain composed against someone who is actively resisting you.

We don’t want students who simply know a collection of techniques.

We want to develop people who are dangerous and capable everywhere.

Whether your skills are tested in competition, self-defense, or simply against a tough training partner, we want you to have confidence that what you’ve learned actually works.

TRAIN HARD. TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER.

YOUR TRAINING PARTNERS MAKE YOU BETTER

Effective Jiu Jitsu requires resistance. You need people who challenge you, expose weaknesses in your game, and force you to solve problems.

Those same people are also your training partners.

We expect our students to respect the tap, control dangerous positions and submissions, understand who they’re training with, and use an appropriate level of intensity.

A hard round between two experienced competitors can look very different from a round with someone in their first week.

Learning that difference is part of becoming a good martial artist and a good training partner.

We want everyone in the room getting better — and we need each other to do it.

PUSH YOUR LIMITS WITHOUT DESTROYING YOURSELF

BUILDING TOUGHER, MORE CAPABLE PEOPLE

We believe there’s tremendous value in doing difficult things.

Jiu Jitsu puts you in uncomfortable positions. It makes you tired. It forces you to solve problems under pressure. Sometimes you’ll fail repeatedly before something finally clicks.

That’s part of what makes training so rewarding.

We want our students to push themselves, become more resilient, improve their physical abilities, and discover that they’re capable of more than they thought.

But toughness isn’t measured by how beat-up you are after class.

Our goal is to build you up, not break you down.

We want you becoming stronger, tougher, healthier, more confident, and more capable on the mats — while still being able to enjoy your family, career, hobbies, and life outside the academy.

Train hard. Stay healthy. Keep getting better.

HOW WE TRAIN

EVERY CLASS BUILDS TOWARD LIVE JIU JITSU

Our classes follow a progression designed to take you from understanding a skill to actually being able to use it against resistance.

01 — MOVEMENT & DRILLS

We begin with drills that warm up the body while introducing movements and concepts related to the lesson of the day.

Rather than warming up just for the sake of getting tired, we want those first minutes of class to help prepare your body and your brain for what we’re about to learn.

02 — TECHNIQUE

Next, we break down and drill the techniques of the day.

This isn’t just about memorizing where your hands and feet go. We want students to understand why a technique works, how it works, when to use it, and the tactics that allow you to successfully employ it against another person.

This is where we slow things down, polish the details, ask questions, troubleshoot problems, and build quality repetitions.

03 — SITUATIONAL SPARRING

Then we add resistance.

Students begin in the position we’ve been studying and spar with specific goals. Your partner knows what you’re trying to accomplish — and they’re actively trying to stop you.

This is where technique becomes skill.

You get immediate feedback about what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change. You learn to adjust timing, pressure, positioning, and decision-making against a resisting opponent while getting repeated opportunities to work on the specific skills we’re developing that day.

04 — LIVE ROLLING

Finally, we put everything together.

We start standing and grapple freely until someone taps, allowing students to work their complete Jiu Jitsu game.

Takedowns. Throws. Guard. Passing. Control. Escapes. Transitions. Submissions.

There is no predetermined position or technique you have to use. You make decisions, solve problems, and apply the skills you’ve developed throughout your training.

This is where all the pieces become Jiu Jitsu.

START WHERE YOU ARE.

WE’LL HELP YOU BUILD FROM THERE.

You don’t have to become a competitor. You don’t have to be the toughest person in the room.

You just have to be willing to learn.

We’ll give you the coaching, training partners, structure, and opportunity to develop real skills — one class at a time.
