YOU DON’T NEED TO GET IN SHAPE BEFORE YOU START.
You don’t need to be strong.
You don’t need to be flexible.
And you definitely don’t need to know anything about Jiu Jitsu.
You just have to start.
At Primate, we’ll teach you how to grapple from the ground up—from your first takedown and escape to eventually being able to control and submit a fully resisting opponent.
And somewhere along the way, you’ll probably realize you’ve gotten into pretty damn good shape too.
WHY JIU JITSU?
There’s a reason people become obsessed with this stuff.
LEARN A REAL SKILL
Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to use leverage, positioning, timing and technique to control another person.
You’ll learn takedowns, escapes, pins, submissions and how to deal with someone who is actively trying to stop you.
It’s not choreography.
It works because you practice it against people who resist.
GET IN SHAPE WITHOUT “WORKING OUT”
You can run on a treadmill for 45 minutes while staring at the wall.
Or you can wrestle another human being.
We’ll take option two.
Jiu Jitsu develops strength, conditioning, coordination, mobility and endurance while your brain is busy trying to solve the problem in front of you.
It’s one of the few workouts where an hour can disappear before you realize how exhausted you are.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF
There is always another problem to solve in Jiu Jitsu.
A new position.
A new technique.
A bigger opponent.
A faster opponent.
Something that worked yesterday suddenly stops working today.
That constant challenge is what keeps training interesting.
You never really finish learning Jiu Jitsu.
LEARN TO BE COMFORTABLE UNDER PRESSURE
Someone trying to hold you down is a very convincing reason to remain calm.
Training teaches you to breathe, think and solve problems while you’re tired and uncomfortable.
Over time, situations that once felt overwhelming become familiar.
And that ability to stay composed under pressure has a funny way of following you off the mats.
TRAIN WITH GOOD PEOPLE
Jiu Jitsu may be an individual sport, but you can’t learn it alone.
You’ll train with people of different ages, professions, backgrounds and experience levels who are all trying to get a little better.
You don’t need to show up knowing anyone.
You’ll get to know people pretty quickly when you’re trying to choke each other.

WHAT WILL YOU ACTUALLY LEARN?
At Primate, we believe a good grappler should be dangerous everywhere.
That means learning more than what happens once you’re already sitting on the ground.
You’ll develop skills in:
TAKEDOWNS
Learn how to close distance, control another person’s body and bring the fight to the ground.
POSITIONAL CONTROL
Learn how to use pressure, leverage and positioning to control someone without relying entirely on strength.
ESCAPES
Learn what to do when you’re the person stuck underneath.
SUBMISSIONS
Chokes, joint locks and the mechanics behind finishing a fight once you’ve established control.
LIVE GRAPPLING
You’ll eventually put everything together against fully resisting training partners.
That’s where Jiu Jitsu becomes Jiu Jitsu.

WHAT TO EXPECT YOUR FIRST DAY
Walking into a Jiu Jitsu gym for the first time can feel intimidating.
We know.
Almost everyone on our mats had a first day where they didn’t know the difference between a guard, a mount or whatever the hell everyone was talking about.
So we make getting started simple.
1. SHOW UP
We’ll introduce you to the gym, your coaches and the people you’ll be training with.
We’ll tell you where to go and what to do.
You won’t be wandering around pretending you know what’s happening.
2. WE’LL TEACH YOU
You don’t need to memorize anything beforehand.
We’ll walk you through the techniques being taught and help you as you practice.
Questions are encouraged.
3. TRAIN AT YOUR LEVEL
Nobody expects a brand-new student to perform like an experienced grappler.
You’ll work at an appropriate pace and gradually become more comfortable as you learn.
4. SEE IF YOU LIKE IT
That’s the whole point of the free class.
Come experience Primate for yourself.
If you love it, we’ll show you how to continue training.
If you decide it’s not for you, there’s no obligation to join.
“AM I TOO OLD OR OUT OF SHAPE TO START?”
Probably not.
People start Jiu Jitsu at all different ages and fitness levels.
You don’t need six-pack abs, ridiculous flexibility or a wrestling background.
And waiting until you’re “in shape enough for Jiu Jitsu” is a little like waiting until you’re good at swimming before taking swimming lessons.
Training is how you get better at training.
Start where you are.
“WHAT IF I’VE NEVER DONE A MARTIAL ART?”
Even better.
We’ll teach you.
Every experienced person you see training at Primate was once the new person who had absolutely no idea what they were doing.
The goal isn’t to already be good.
The goal is to get better.
CAN WOMEN TRAIN JIU JITSU?
Of course.
Women train alongside the men in our regular Jiu Jitsu classes, from complete beginners all the way to experienced competitors and female black belts who regularly train on our mats.
You don’t need to be strong, aggressive, or have any previous martial arts experience to get started.
Just show up. We’ll teach you the rest.

WHAT DOES A PRIMATE CLASS LOOK LIKE?
We want you to understand techniques—not just memorize movements.
Classes generally begin by developing the movements and concepts you’ll need for the day’s position.
Your coach will introduce the technique, explain why it works and give you time to practice it with a partner.
Then we gradually add resistance.
You’ll work through situational training where your partner begins actively trying to stop what you’re doing.
Eventually, those skills get tested in live grappling.
Learn it. Drill it. Test it. Refine it.
That’s how you develop Jiu Jitsu that actually works.

WHY TRAIN AT PRIMATE?
We want to develop complete grapplers.
That means being able to wrestle.
Take someone down.
Control them.
Escape bad positions.
Attack submissions.
Defend yourself.
And put those skills together against another person who is actively trying to stop you.
Our training combines elements of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and Judo to develop grapplers who are comfortable wherever the match or fight goes.
But you don’t need to be a competitor to train this way.
Some people train to compete.
Some train for fitness.
Some want practical self-defense skills.
Some just discovered that trying to strangle their friends a few nights a week is considerably more entertaining than going to the gym.
Whatever brought you through the door, we’ll meet you where you are and help you improve from there.

YOU’VE THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING JIU JITSU.
Maybe you’ve watched videos.
Maybe a friend keeps telling you to try it.
Maybe you’ve driven past the gym.
Maybe you’ve been saying:
“I’ll do it once I get in better shape.”
Stop waiting until you’re ready.
Nobody is ready for their first Jiu Jitsu class.
That’s why it’s your first class.
Come try one for FREE.
Worst case?
You spend an hour learning something new.
Best case?
You find something you’ll be doing for the rest of your life.
